The monument
Two stories, two periods: a château with a double life.
This grandiose château was begun in 1599 for the Duc d'Épernon, a favourite of Henri III, and was used as a women's prison between 1820 and 1852. Today, it retains aspects of its fabulous 17th century décor (sculptures, piantings, joinery, fireplaces, painted ceilings) as well as signs of the harsh reality of its life as a house of detention for over 130 years.
