Go to the monument’s pageThe monument
A huge fortress with seventeen towers set in the heart of the town and home to the famous 14th century Tapestry of the Apocalypse.
Angers castle was built on the site of a Gallo-Roman settlement and around the palace of the fisrt Dukes of Anjou. The castle dominates the skyline of Angers and the seventeen blue schist and white stone towers were erected around 1230. The dukes of Anjou established their court here in the 14th and 15th century.
The Tapestry of the Apocalypse, woven in around 1375, is the major attraction at the castle. It is displayed in a specially designed and renovated gallery. It is also a perfect example of the fine colours and techniques used at the time and is the largest mediaeval tapestry in existence.
