15km from Perpignan and the Mediterranean beaches, the Fortress of Salses, built in the 16th century by Ferdinand 2d and Isabel, Queen of Castille, to guard the ancient frontier between France and Spain, features impressive architecture, with its 12-metre thick walls, counter mine galleries, artillery towers and keep. Designed to house a garrison of 1,500 men and 300 horsemen, the visit explores how they lived and the defence systems used as well it explains the lively history of this old Catalan frontier. The fortress is situated in stunning natural surroundings, between the lakes of Salses and the Corbières mountains, offering visitors exceptional views and a truly unique atmosphere.
